Why six, and not six hundred
Anyone can list six hundred houses. Nobody can know them. We keep six because six is the number we can walk through ourselves before they join, walk through again each season, and put in the hands of one person who lives on the island — the same person every time, not whoever the rota sends.
A house only earns its place by being better than what we already have at that size, in that corner of the island. Owners ask us most weeks. We say no to houses that would have made us money, which is exactly why the six that made it are worth your week.
So when you write with a question, the answer comes from somebody who has stood in that room, in that season, and knows whether the light is any good in October.
